About the Woman's Building

Women moving The Great Lady Rising

The founding of the Woman's Building in Los Angeles in 1973 was the culmination of several years of activity by women artists who were energized by the feminist movement in this country. It was an epicenter of feminist art and theory until it closed in 1991.

About the Archive

In 1997, as part of the Getty Information Institute's "Faces of L.A." Project, more than 1500 images documenting the history of this unique L.A. Arts institution were selected and digitized. They are now available through the Woman's Building site.

Formerly held at Otis College of Art and Design, the collection is now housed at the Getty Research Institute.
