Introduction

The Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design was a hub of contemporary art exhibitions for over 60 years. Over the course of its operations, the Gallery showcased a diverse array of emerging and established regional, national, and international artists through both group and solo shows. The Gallery organized original exhibitions and participated in touring shows on a national and international scale.

The work presented at the Gallery was connected to the Otis community and broader public through exhibitions, programming, and publications. Open freely to the public year-round, the Gallery served Los Angeles’ vibrant art community and the city's diverse population, while acting as an integral, real-world educational resource for students, faculty, and staff on the campus of the world-renowned art institution.

The Ben Maltz Gallery first opened its doors as the Otis Gallery in 1957 at the college's MacArthur Park campus. In 1997, the Gallery relocated to the college's new home in Westchester. It was renamed and relocated to a new building on campus in 2001. The Gallery closed its doors in 2020.

Upon the closure of the gallery, the library has taken in its physical archives. The Archive contains documentation of gallery operations, exhibitions and other programs, catalogs, postcards, press releases, installation views, and more. Please direct research inquiries to library@otis.edu.
