How to Create an Outline

Crafting Your Thesis Statement

A good research paper must include a clear and concise thesis statement.

  • Your thesis statement will embody the argument you are making through your paper.
  • All aspects of your paper should connect to it.
  • Ideally, a thesis statement should not be longer than a sentence. Further, it should appear within the first paragraph of your introduction. Introducing it succinctly and early on lets your reader know what your paper is about and its purpose.
  • Your thesis statement will be formulated AFTER doing research. It is normal for it to shift as you learn more.
  • Make sure your thesis statement addresses ALL aspects of the assignment's prompt!
